Sarah Riley

Artist’s Statement
"In the late 60’s I worked in sculpture, California Funk. I worked my way back to painting from sculpture, to collage, to torn fabric hangings, finally to specific images and then combined and layered imagery. For a long time I was concerned with formalistic resolution in my paintings. Now I view the content and the formal means of presentation equally. I am interested in color, narrative, gesture, lots of paint and texture and discordant elements from diverse stylistic sources. In a culture where so much of the visual stimuli is directing us to a specific goal, organic reflective painting is a place to wander. Reverie is important.
Photography is playing a larger role in my work these days. I manipulate images in the digital darkroom for use in paintings and drawings as well as to stand alone. I often use digital imagery as a place to begin a painting or print. Poetry through a collage of images is the goal.”
