Artist’s Statement

This piece is the beginning of a new series of work for me.

In the past ten years or so I have been working mainly with botanical forms derived from the sub-tropical climate that I live in. The images became metaphors of my life and “portraits” of the characters of individuals that I encounter or have encountered in my life, particularly from the Bootheel (a nickname that refers to the southeastern area of the state of Missouri).

My work has always been figurative, either in a symbolic way or directly through the image(s) used in the piece. The idea of going back to using the human form and mixing it with an object of nature is still a source of fascination for me. The direct connection of human to environment is the constant in my imagery.
